Backward flight from the leading edge on the ground lesson by Cramayailes

Taking off in backward flight from the leading edge on the ground: walk back, build pressure, turn. The aim is to make the kite look as if it were flying forward, blurring front and back.

Backward flight from the leading edge on the ground lesson by Cramayailes

Key takeaways from this video

  • The sequence is: move back, apply pressure, rotate. From forward flight you set off in the opposite direction; from backward flight, in the same direction.
  • To take off, release the brakes while moving back, then tighten them again, with possibly a very light arm movement.
  • The aim is to give the impression that the kite is moving forward, as in forward flight, to blur forward and backward.

  1. Taking off in backward flight from the leading edge on the ground

    0:00

In this lesson, we are going to learn how to start backward flight from a resting position, leading edge on the ground.

Move back, apply pressure, rotate, and off we go in backward flight, here in the direction opposite to where we came from. We were in forward flight to the left, and we set off in backward flight to the right.

  2. From backward flight

    0:30

It can also be done from backward flight. You set the kite down, leading edge on the ground, and you set off in exactly the same direction in backward flight.

  3. Releasing the brakes while moving back, then tightening them

    1:00

We release the brakes while moving back, we tighten the brakes to start the takeoff. You can also give a light push with the arms, but very light.

I am going to set the kite down leading edge on the ground, watch closely: I release the brakes while moving back, then I tighten the brakes to take off.

  4. Blurring forward and backward

    2:00

Sensitivity in the backward movement and the brake for takeoff in backward flight is important. You really have to give the impression that the kite is going backward as if it were forward flight, to blur the lines between the front and the back of the kite.

This helps give the quad-line effect people look for when flying a revo.

  5. The takeoff in slow motion

    2:25

A slow-motion replay lets us detail the takeoff phase here.
