When there's little wind and the kite doesn't fly easily, you instinctively walk backward. Once you reach the end of the field, you need to gain ground, and there are basically two ways. The first is to fly the kite nearly to the top of the wind window, then do a vertical slide downward while walking forward. The other is to fly the kite to the top of the window, turn 180 degrees and descend vertically, braking slightly while walking downwind. When gaining ground, walk forward fairly slowly: as the kite comes down, the lines must stay taut, and you should always feel slight wind pressure on the sail.
