Key takeaways from this video

  • A rollover landing passes over kites already on the ground, then turns and lands in line beside them.
  • Keep a consistent altitude above the landed kites to avoid catching lines or landing on a partner.
  • The turn uses the same input as a 180: squeeze the bottom reverse wing until the kite faces up, then set it down.

  1. The maneuver

    0:00

This time we're going to talk about the rollover landing. It's a basic team maneuver, but it gets the crowd every time. Say you're the tail gunner and the kites in front of you have already landed: you fly over the top of everyone on the ground, then spin around and land. The kites leapfrog into these rollover landings until everyone is in a row on the ground without any wraps.

  2. Altitude

    0:32

Let's break it down, because I see a lot of folks come in too low and catch some lines, or spin a little too soon and come down on top of their partners. As you come along, always drop into a line that leaves enough room over the kites below you. That altitude is key: find an average altitude and stick with it every time, and you'll come in a lot better.

  3. The turn

    1:01

Over the kites that have already landed, I do the same maneuver as a 180 — there's another tutorial for that — squeezing the brake line of the bottom wing, the reverse wing, completing the rotation to face up, then setting it down. Broken down further: pause for a moment, fly that reverse wing, face up, and land. Getting this square corner is key in the rollover: across the window, squeeze the bottom until the kite faces up, then land.
