Key takeaways from this video
- With the Reflex, a Rev lying face down comes up with a firm pull: it lifts and floats, and a second pull gets it flying.
- Another method: step forward to bring the bottom towards you, then take the Rev off in reverse.
- From a side hover, the bottom wing rises in a turn, whichever way it goes, while the top wing always goes down.
- So start your spins and turns with the bottom wing to avoid losing altitude.

Nick's two challenges
0:00Hi, I'm Nick, from Kansas. I happen to be in town, and I stopped by the Revolution shop and bought a Double X kite to add to my fleet; I already have an RX. I was having trouble launching my kite from a flat position, belly down, and the second thing I was having trouble with was doing a spin without losing altitude. This was holding me back from getting through the different levels of Club 38. I believe that if Joe can help me, he can help anybody. Let's do it, let's see what the tricks are, and you can earn your level 5. Let's get to it.
The face-down launch
0:45One of the questions Nick had was about the face-down launch. His Rev lands face down, and he has to go up and stand it up and go through all of that. There's an easy way around that, and the Reflex solves the problem. The Reflex lets your wing slope up, so when it's on the ground you give it a sharp tug, it rises up and floats, you give it another tug, it rises up, and you're ready to fly. If you go back on the lines, you can do that. One other quick point he asked about was the tabs and how to disconnect the Reflex. The tab is actually tear-shaped, and there's a little tab here. You grab that tab, hold the sail down and lift up. That's how you disconnect the Reflex. Let's go back to the lines.
Front launch technique
1:26All right, we have the Revolution face down and we're going to do that front launch. The trick is to pull fairly aggressively, because you're trying to get some speed to kick the Reflex in and lift it up. The second thing you can do is a reverse motion. You come forward, and that pulls the bottom toward you more, we kick it up, it comes forward, and that's the face-down launch.
Losing altitude in a spin
1:58Another question was losing altitude during a spin. So whether we're doing a spin or a turn, let's start from a side hover. You have a top wing and a bottom wing. The bottom wing can turn both ways: it can turn by flying forward and it can turn by flying in reverse. Same thing with the top wing: it can fly forward or fly in reverse.
Using the bottom wing
2:20The trick with the bottom wing is that no matter which way you turn it, it goes up. If you turn it in reverse, it goes up in reverse; if you turn it forward, it goes up forward. The top wing, on the other hand, goes down either way, forward or reverse. So if you initiate the turn with the top wing, you'll lose altitude; if you initiate the turn with the bottom wing, either way, you'll gain altitude in the turn.
Indoor demonstration
2:48Let's take it indoors with the handles and then I'll show you outside. Here we are in the side hover. The left wing is on top and the right wing is on the bottom. We can fly the bottom wing in reverse and start to turn, and you can see the kite rises. Or you can fly the bottom wing forward, and see how it rises too. Now let's do the top wing in reverse: see how it drops. Let's do the top wing forward: it drops in the turn as well. So the trick is to use the bottom wing in your turn, and you won't lose altitude. That's how you do the spin. Hey Nick, thanks for coming out, I really appreciate it. Thanks for having me, Joe. You bet. I hope this is useful to you.
