Add Details to Your Rev Flying to Fly Like a Pro by Revolution Kites
Three aspects of flying to refine to show your mastery of the Rev: turns and spins, stops, then hover stability.
From the series Progression and mastery. Transcript by QuadKites.org.
Key takeaways from this video
- To turn, keep your hands together and push only the thumb on the side of the turn; to tighten a spin, also rotate the other thumb back.
- Stop a spin crisply by counter-rotating the handles; to keep your height, pull the wing sharply as it passes through the bottom.
- For a faster stop, send your thumbs forward as fast as you can, then release the pressure and find the hover.
- Train the hover by moving slightly forward, back, sideways and pivoting, preferably from a side hover.

Details of turns
0:00Hi, I'm Joe Hadzicki, inventor of the Revolution. The precision control of your Revolution is what sets it apart from all other kite designs. By adding precision and details to your flying, you will both sharpen your skills and show us your Rev mastery. So let's add some detail to three aspects of your Rev flying. Number one: adding details to your turns and spins. To turn your Rev, start with your hands back as your Rev is flying, and then push the thumb forward on the side you want to turn. Left turn, right turn. Don't push your hand forward while you're pushing the turn; keep those hands together. Left turn, right turn.
Tight spins and keeping height
1:36To increase the tightness of the spins, don't only push the thumb forward but also rotate the other thumb back. So your left turn, left spin, will look like this. Right turn, right spin. To sharply and precisely stop your spin, counter-rotate your handles at the end of the spin. So for example: left spin, counter, hover. Right spin, counter, catch. To maintain your height during a spin, pull the handle back sharply as your Rev moves through the bottom of the spin. In this case your left wing is on the bottom, and as it moves through the bottom, pull back, pull back. You're not really changing any of the angles, you're just accelerating the wing, and that causes the wing to rise slightly, and that's how you maintain your height.
Sharpening the stop
3:21Number two: let's sharpen the details of your stop. To stop your Rev faster, throw those thumbs forward faster, as fast as you can. To make your stops more stable, after you throw your hands forward, back off on that thumb pressure and feel for the hover. It looks like this: stop, back off, feel for the hover. Don't get discouraged with this. It's challenging and it takes some practice, but notice how you get better with each try.
Hover stability
4:33After the stop we're in a hover, so for number three, let's take a closer look at the details of the hover. One of the key points in the hover is stability. What I want you to do is think steady, because your muscles will follow your thoughts. There are really three aspects to the hover: you can move forward and backward out of that hover, you can move sideways out of that hover, or you can rotate. So I want you to get in a hover and then slightly move in all three of those directions. This will train your muscles to adjust when you're slightly out of balance.
Hover handle rotations
5:06Your handle rotations are going to look like this. We're going to do it on a right side hover, because the side hover is the most stable, and we're going to be slightly pulled back on the top handle, because the top wing needs some more lift to keep it in position. From that hover position, we're going to slightly fly forward, slightly fly in reverse, slightly slide up, slightly slide down, and finally slightly rotate left and slightly rotate right. Now let's practice flying in all directions and stopping, with the focus on steady, rock solid. Here's a classic rule of Rev flying: if you focus on the details, your details will get better. All right, let's put it all together: spins, stops and hovers.
