Turning by Aerialis Kites

Key takeaways from this video

  • The turn comes from the wrists: hold the handles with your thumbs on top and push one thumb forward.
  • Left thumb forward turns the kite left; right thumb forward turns it right.
  • The inputs are tiny, so practice small movements to turn smoothly.

  1. Turning left and right

    1:36

Welcome to another tutorial. In a previous tutorial I was talking about some basic stuff: the launch and the landing. Today we're going to take it a step further: now we're going to try to turn your kite, from left to right.

  2. One way to turn

    2:02

All right. There are of course several ways to turn your kite. I'm going to show you one way of doing it. You might prefer another way, well, we'll have to live with that, but hopefully my way of doing things might suit your needs as well. So let's give it a go.

  3. It's all in the wrists

    2:22

It's all in the wrists, so make sure to get a good hold on those handles, and put your thumbs on top of the handles, like I am doing here. Now I'm ready to initiate a turn. By pushing a thumb forward I apply the brake, and the kite will turn. Left thumb forward, and the kite will turn to the left. Right thumb forward, and the kite will turn to the right.

  4. From another angle

    3:08

And now from another angle. First the launch. Here we go. And then I fly the kite left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right.

  5. Tiny inputs

    3:34

As you can see, just tiny inputs. It's more than you know. And from yet another angle: now you can see my input and see how the kite reacts. The same sequence.

  6. In slow motion

    3:57

But now in slow motion. Right thumb forward, the kite turns right. Left thumb forward, the kite turns left. Right, and left, and right. And, yeah, we've come to the end. That's all there is to it. So now, hopefully, next time you hit the field you can do smooth turning just like this. Thanks for watching, and bye bye.
