Mastering the Revolution wind window by Revolution Kites
The wind window and what it means for a Rev pilot: stay in the centre, do not fly too close to the edge or the ground, and use the step back wisely.

Key takeaways from this video
- Set the Rev up directly downwind; in theory the window extends 90 degrees to each side and up to the vertical, but a beginner flies mostly in the centre.
- Flying too far towards the edge leaves the Rev carried only by its momentum, without enough wind to come back: turn back earlier.
- Near the ground the wind is weaker and more turbulent: stay a little higher.
- A step back at the edge adds wind: use it to come back into the window, not to go even further.

What is the wind window
0:00I'm Joe Hadzicki, inventor of the Revolution, and today the topic is the wind window. What is the wind window, and how does it affect Rev pilots? Let's take a quick look at the basics and a few tips and tricks to help you make the best of it.
The wind window basics
0:12You should have your Rev set up directly downwind. The wind is blowing directly at me, and this is how you would have your Rev set up. The wind window extends, in theory, 90 degrees to the left and 90 degrees to the right. It also extends upward 90 degrees, directly overhead. But as a beginning pilot, you're going to be flying more in the center of this window area. As the wind increases, you'll be able to fly a little further out. But your goal is to stay downwind, in the center of that window.
Flying too far out
1:41Let's take a quick look at some of the challenges of the wind window, and little tips and tricks to get around them. The first one is flying too far outside the edge of your window. It feels like you're flying fine and your Rev just keeps moving, but it's actually the momentum that's carrying it out there. There's not enough wind out there to actually bring it back in. The way to stay ahead of this is not to fly that far out. Even though it's flying out there, remember you want to stay in the center of the window, so turn back earlier and stay in the center of that window.
Height and stepping back
2:31Problem number two: people have a tendency to fly too close to the ground. Down near the ground, the wind is weaker and tends to be more turbulent. Stay a little higher above the ground when flying, especially when you're flying the Club 38 level performances. Challenge number three: when you fly out to the edge and start to lose wind pressure, people often step back, which actually is somewhat of a solution. The key is that as you step back and add some wind, you use that to get back into the window. Don't use it to fly further out to the edge. As your Reflex skills improve, you'll be able to fly far beyond the window's edge using the glide of the Reflex.
