Revolution 3-D Toss and 3-D Flying by Revolution Kites
Short-line or 3D flying, and the 3-D toss with a Reflex XX, right next to buildings: why it brings you closer to the kite, and how to throw it.
From the series Spins, hover and reverse. Transcript by QuadKites.org.
Key takeaways from this video
- On short lines you are right above the Rev, almost as if you were holding its wings, and the Reflex float makes the 3-D toss playful.
- 30 ft (about 9 m) lines go out and come back in very quickly and let you fly in tight spaces.
- To throw, hold the handles in one hand and the Rev by the centre in the other, then throw it straight downwind, neither too low nor too hard.
- The throw usually ends upside down: catch the inverted hover, then fly out of it.

Why fly short lines
0:00All right, let's talk about short-line flying a little bit. What I like about short-line flying, or 3-D flying, is that it connects you with your Rev. You're right on top of it. It's almost like you're handling the wings themselves. I love the 3-D toss. With the Reflex, I've got a Reflex XX, so it's got a lot of float characteristics, and I like playing with that floating. Sometimes I catch it, sometimes it just floats over my head and keeps going.
Advantages of short lines
0:26A couple of my favorite things about short-line flying: the lines are so short that it's very easy to take in and put out. I'm flying 30-foot lines today. The other thing is that you can fly in very tight spaces. I'm right up against the buildings here, so it's a terrible place to fly, but let's try some 3-D stuff. It's easy to fly in crowded spaces, and I just like the float characteristics of the kite and playing with that.
Launching the Rev
0:52Here's a little launch, since people have been asking about launches. I'm left-handed, so I throw with my left hand. I've got my handles in my right hand, and I'm ready to grab them and fly. I hold the Rev at about the center point, and I just throw it straight downwind. The Reflex tends to float up, so let's see how the toss goes.
The trick of the toss
2:10The trick with the toss is that I don't throw it too low and I don't throw it too hard, but you can start out hard. The shorter the lines, the easier it is to pick up that trick, and I love the float of the Reflex. The other thing is that you end up in an inversion, so you need to catch that hover and then fly it out of there. That's the trick with the toss: it typically ends up inverted.
