Don't Destroy Your Revolution Kite: 5 Tips by Revolution Kites

Key takeaways from this video

  • Practise stopping the Rev in every direction: repeated crashes wear it out, even though it is built to take them.
  • During a crash, do not pull the handles back towards you, which speeds it up: push them forward and down.
  • If the sail flutters, a slight adjustment of the handle rotation stops it without slowing the Rev.
  • In high wind, a vented sail, longer top leaders and a lower grip on the handle slow the Rev down.

  1. Intro and constant crashing

    0:00

Hi, I'm Joe Hadzicki, inventor of the Revolution. Your Rev is designed to give you years of flying fun, but there are five mistakes that people often make that will shorten the life of your Revolution. Let's take a look. Mistake number one: constant crashing. Your Rev is designed to take a crash. For example, the wing shaft is shock mounted to the leading edge, so on impact the shock cord can absorb the crash. But in general, crashing increases wear and tear on your Rev. So here's the solution: practice stopping your Rev in every direction without hesitation, like this. Flying up, stop. Flying to the side, stop. And then of course into the ground, stop. Check out our video link to master the stop.

  2. Pulling during a crash

    0:58

Mistake number two: pulling during a crash will make it even worse. You know by now that rotating the handle is very critical to your flight. Rotating those thumbs back towards you will make your kite fly faster forward. Pushing it forward will cause you to slow or reverse. The natural reaction in a crash is to pull your handles back to try to get your height to go up in the air. With the Revolution, what you're actually doing is accelerating it into the crash. Pulling your hands up over your shoulders will make the crash worse. The solution is don't pull your hands back and up for the crash. Actually push them forward and down.

  3. Flutter

    1:48

Mistake number three: flutter. Flutter is caused by your wings, and you can easily fix this with handle rotation. Remember, rotating back is forward flight and rotating forward is reverse flight. If you have too much forward flight, you can cause flutter. With a slight adjustment you can remove the flutter without slowing the Rev. If you do too much, you'll slow it, stop it, or even send it into reverse flight. Just the right amount of pressure will stop the flutter without slowing your Rev.

  4. Sliding on the leading edge

    2:27

Mistake number four: sliding your Rev upside down on its leading edge across the ground, across the sand, or worse than that, across hard surfaces. On grass it's not as bad. The solution is to reverse a wing and flip your Rev over rather than pulling it into a slide, just like this. If you're trying to learn the inverted side slide skill, I'll put a link below for advanced inverted skills. Check it out.

  5. Flying in high winds

    3:11

Mistake number five: flying in high winds without the right preparation and the right skills. There are several things you can do to improve your high wind flying experience. First, you can fly a vented Revolution. This is the Reflex XX Super Tarantula. This venting lets more of the air through and it reduces the stress on the Rev and on you. Second, it also helps to let your top leaders out or bring your bottom leader in. This will help slow your Rev. The third thing to do is to slide your hand down the grip a little bit. This will also help slow your Rev down.

  6. Slow motion practice

    3:53

Tip number four: practice slow motion flying. Focus on that while you're flying in those high winds, and this will, number one, take the stress off your Rev and, number two, greatly improve your skills. I'll leave a link to it in the description below.
