Key takeaways from this video
- The regular pancake comes first: go up and over, snap the bottom lines as the kite comes down, then let out.
- The pancake catch pulls all the lines back so that the kite comes to you and is caught by the V.
- In the axel catch, pulling one line makes the pancaking kite spin; catch it as it drifts toward you, or it hits you.

Today I'll teach you how to do a pancake indoors with a Revolution kite. I'm flying an indoor Rev with the outdoor end caps you'd find on a 1.5 or a Rev 1; older indoor models had end caps that went inside the rod instead of covering it. I also have erasers on the bottoms, which give a little more traction when the kite stands there so it doesn't fall over all the time.
We'll do the pancake and some variations. Start with the regular pancake, because you need it for the rest. Go up and over and, as the kite comes down, snap the bottom lines and then let out. The whole technique is to snap the bottom lines while the kite is coming down, which brings the tips down, and then let the leading edge continue on. Let me show it again so you can see exactly what my hands are doing: snap and let out.
Now a catch with it, which refers back to the previous toss and catch video. It's one of the two catches I wasn't able to show you before. Go up and over, pancake, and pull all the lines back: the kite comes back to you and you catch it in the V of the kite.
Next, a slightly more complicated one that I call the axel catch. The kite pancakes, spins, and you catch it while it's spinning. Go up and over, then pancake. When it pancakes, I pull on one line with one hand, which makes the kite spin; while it spins it tends to come toward you a bit, so you catch it as it comes, otherwise you get smacked by it. One more time: up and over, pancake and spin.
