Is the Revolution Tarantula the right wing for you? A vented Spider version of the Reflex XX by Revolution Kites

Key takeaways from this video

  • The XX is built on a 33-inch (about 84 cm) rod instead of 31 (about 79 cm): larger, it is more stable, which helps snap spins and reverse flight.
  • The Spider version is vented: it improves reverse flight while keeping the stability of the large wing.
  • The Tarantula flies in lighter wind thanks to its large sail and in stronger wind thanks to its vents, while staying as snappy as a 1.5.
  • The Don Fox Box, a double master level figure, is named after this pilot.

  1. The XX version

Hi, I'm Joe Hadzicki with Revolution Kites, and we're going to talk about the XX version of the Revolution. The standard Revolution, the 1.5 size, is the RX. This is the larger version, and the wing is based on a 33-inch shaft rather than a 31-inch shaft. The great thing about the Reflex is that the Reflex wing gives it a float and a stability. I'm on 30-foot lines, which makes it really fun to do that toss and launch thing. The larger size of the XX gives it that stability, so it helps in snap spins and reverse flight and all those things. And it helps you move up through levels. So if you want to sharpen your skills, with Club 38 of course, going through your skill levels, this is an awesome kite to do it.

  2. The Spider version

But what we're really here to talk about is the Spider version of the XX. And one of my favorite pilots is Don Fox. Here's the Spider version of the wing. You see what it is? It's vented, with flow-through vent sections on it, and that improves the reverse flight, but it still has the stability of that larger wing. So we're going to go back and fly a little bit here. Let me take the camera and introduce you to Don Fox. Hey, Don. How are you doing? Good. How are you doing? Good.

  3. Don Fox on the XX

    1:33

So we're taking a little break. This is your local flying field for when you take a little lunch break, and I figured I'd come up and we'd do a quick little flying. So we've kind of gone through the whole gamut with you. We like to use you as a test subject on the new designs. We gave you one of the original Reflex RX models, the 1.5, and you really liked that, and then we moved you up to the XX model, and you got used to that. What did you like about the XX? The XX definitely flew in lighter wind conditions with the larger sail, but it wasn't quite as snappy or as responsive as the 1.5. Right, so that snap you were used to from the smaller size wasn't really there.

  4. Don Fox on the Tarantula

    2:17

But then we gave you the Spider version of the XX, what you call the Tarantula, and you've been flying that for about six months now. What are your feelings on that? Yeah, that's currently my favorite kite, just because of the broad wind range. The larger sail allows me to fly in lighter conditions and the vented sail allows me to fly in higher wind conditions. So, a broad wind range, and it's snappy like the 1.5. That's kind of my take. Wow, so it's snappier because of the venting, but you can even fly it in light conditions. Yeah. Wow, that's kind of amazing. Okay, let's go ahead and launch it up.

  5. The Don Fox Box

    2:51

Don Fox is one of our premier pilots, and he's actually one of our pilots who does the Don Fox Box. This is one of the moves for the double master level, and this is where it actually comes from. Don's very quick. He likes his little fast fly to an instant snap, and that's the Don Fox Box. Isn't that awesome? That is really cool.

  6. Light-wind flying at the field

    3:15

Your wife was even flying with you the other day, and she's about a level three pilot, and I heard she was flying the Tarantula in really light conditions. I was really shocked by that. But this is an awesome field you've got here. What a great park to fly in, and it's right down from work. That's why we're a little overdressed today: we're at work today. But thanks, Don, for coming out, and we'll do another video. Thanks a lot. Well, thank you.
